Position Description

Registered Nurse – Pre/Post GOR Department UPMC Mercy

UPMC Mercy is hiring a skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse to join our Pre/Post department supporting the General Operating Room (GOR). This is a daylight-only position with no on-call responsibilities and minimal weekend or holiday shifts—perfect for those seeking work-life balance in a dynamic surgical support environment.

We’re looking for candidates with:

  • Minimum 4 years of nursing experience
  • ICU experience strongly preferred
  • Candidates who do not meet these requirements will not be considered.

Schedule: Monday–Friday, with shifts starting as early as 5:00 AM and ending by 8:30 PM.

As part of our team, you’ll play a vital role in supporting patients before and after surgery, ensuring safe transitions and high-quality care.

Responsibilities:

  • Identifies opportunities for clinical quality and workplace improvement; applies evidence-based practice routinely. Leads or participates in teams that drive innovations in patient care and workforce wellness.
  • Serves as a role model and unit leader in clinical expertise, teaching, resource nursing, or evidence-based practice. Provides feedback to team members and engages in nursing peer review.
  • Promotes changes that enhance patient care and the unit environment. Demonstrates strong clinical assessment and analytical skills within Relationship Based Care. Participates in shared governance and hospital-wide councils.
  • Passionately develops others by precepting students, graduate nurses, and new hires. Identifies learning opportunities and supports continuous improvement through feedback, research sharing, and educational initiatives.
  • Applies the nursing process to create a healing environment, involving patients as partners in holistic care planning. Communicates effectively with care teams and documents comprehensively to support collaboration.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues. Aligns daily work with organizational goals to improve safety, quality, and patient satisfaction.
  • Builds compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues. Fosters a healthy workplace by modeling cultural awareness, addressing horizontal violence, and maintaining work-life balance through prioritization and delegation.
  • Minimum of 2 years nursing experience required
  • BSN preferred; a Master’s in a related field may substitute for certification
  • Must achieve and maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher rating on annual Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan and ability to assess and respond to age-specific patient needs

Professional Requirements

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Proven capacity to work effectively in complex environments with changing priorities and specialized equipment
  • Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning
  • Mobility and visual/manual dexterity required

Professional Development

  • Annual completion of a professional contribution aligned with department, hospital, or system goals, approved by Unit Director
  • OR obtain a UPMC-approved nursing certification within 1 year of hire/transfer and maintain it
  • Certification not required if holding a Master’s in Nursing or DNP

Licensure and Certifications

  • Current RN licensure in the state of employment or a compact state under the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC)
  • CPR certification per AHA standards required within 30 days of hire
  • ACLS and PALS certifications required within 1 year of hire/transfer
  • UPMC-approved nursing certification preferred
  • Act 34 clearance required

Additional Notes

  • Employees with out-of-state NLC licenses who change residency to the facility’s state must obtain local licensure within 60 days
